Does Air Conditioning Heat a Room?
Yes — and for most UK homes, heating is the more useful half of what it does.
This surprises people, because "air conditioning" in Britain still means summer. But almost every wall-mounted system sold here now is a reverse-cycle unit, which means it works in both directions.
How it works, without the jargon
An air conditioner doesn't create cold. It moves heat — picking it up from inside your room and dumping it outside.
Run that process backwards and it does the opposite: picks up heat from the outside air and brings it in. That's what a heat pump is, and it's why the industry calls these systems air-to-air heat pumps rather than air conditioners.
Yes, there is usable heat in cold outside air. Modern units keep working well below freezing.
Why it's cheap to run
This is the part that matters.
An electric heater converts electricity to heat at roughly one-to-one. Put a unit of electricity in, get a unit of heat out.
A heat pump doesn't convert — it moves. So one unit of electricity can move several units of heat into your room. That's why running costs are a fraction of an electric radiator or a fan heater for the same warmth.
Efficiency drops as it gets colder outside, because there's less heat to gather. But even on a cold British day it stays well ahead of direct electric heating.
Where it makes most sense
Air-to-air heat pumps warm the room they're in, quickly, without heating the whole house. That makes them particularly good for:
- A home office you use during the day, when firing up the whole central heating system is wasteful
- A conservatory or garden room, which is usually freezing in winter and unbearable in summer
- A loft conversion or extension, where the existing heating system was never sized for it
- A bedroom the radiators never quite reach
They're a room-by-room solution, not a replacement for your boiler. Used that way, they're very hard to beat.
The catch
They heat air, not water. So they won't do your hot water, and they won't feed your radiators. If you're looking to replace a gas boiler entirely, that's an air-to-water heat pump, which is a different and much bigger job.
For heating and cooling specific rooms well, though, one unit doing both jobs year-round is the efficient answer — and it's why judging these systems on their summer use alone undersells them badly.
