How Much Does Home Air Conditioning Cost in the UK?

Most quotes you'll see online are American, and the numbers don't transfer. UK installs cost more because of our housing stock, our labour rates, and the certification an installer legally needs to handle refrigerant.

Here's what actually drives the figure.

The rough shape of it

For a typical UK home, a single-room system installed usually lands somewhere in the low thousands. Two rooms sharing one outdoor unit costs more in total but less per room. Three rooms, more again — and less again per room.

That pattern is the single most useful thing to understand before you get quotes. One outdoor unit can serve several indoor units, and the outdoor unit is the expensive part. So the cost per room falls sharply the more rooms you do at the same time.

Doing one room now and another next year will almost always cost more than doing both together.

What's in the price

A proper quote should include all of the following. If yours doesn't, ask why.

  • The equipment — outdoor unit, indoor units, controls
  • The pipework — insulated refrigerant lines, trunking, condensate drainage
  • The installation labour
  • The electrical work — usually a dedicated supply, which needs a qualified electrician
  • Commissioning — pressure testing, evacuating the system, charging it, testing it
  • Removal of packaging and waste

Watch for quotes that exclude the electrical work. It's a real cost and it doesn't disappear by being left off the paperwork.

What pushes the price up

Where the indoor unit goes. A unit on an external wall, back-to-back with the outdoor unit, is the quick version. A unit on an internal wall means routing pipework through ceilings or a loft, and that can add most of a day.

The wall itself. Modern cavity brick cores quickly. Solid Victorian brick, flint, or stone takes longer.

Where the outdoor unit goes. Ground level next to the room is straightforward. First floor, or a long run to the other side of the house, adds pipework and access equipment.

How many rooms. As above — more rooms is more expensive in total, cheaper per room.

What it doesn't include

Ongoing servicing. Air conditioning needs an annual service to run efficiently, and most manufacturer warranties are conditional on it being done and documented. Budget for that as a running cost, or take a service plan that covers it.

Getting a price that means something

Any figure quoted without someone seeing your house is a guess. The variables above swing the number too much for a phone estimate to be reliable.

A survey should take about an hour, and a good one will involve measuring rooms, looking at wall construction, checking your consumer unit has capacity, and working out where the outdoor unit can sit without annoying you or your neighbours.

If someone quotes you over the phone without asking any of that, the number will change later.
